The NJP Tour powered by JOOLA tournaments are designed specifically for juniors to compete against players of similar age and skill, creating both an exciting and balanced tournament experience.

To ensure fair play and full divisions, NJP offers a variety of age groups and skill levels.

Please note: if a division has fewer than five players or teams, it may be combined with another closely matched group.

Format

Each division follows a round-robin format, leading to playoffs and medal rounds, so every player gets lots of play!

The top three finishers in every age/skill division and event will receive a medal.

Age Groups

  • Ages 8-12
  • Ages 13-18

Skill Divisions

All players will automatically be placed into Doubles divisions according to their DUPR rating. A free DUPR account is required for participation in NJP events.

DUPR Skill Divisons:

  • No DUPR-3.0
  • 3.0-4.0

Placements & Partnerships

Initial Placement: Players are assigned to divisions based on their DUPR rating at the time of registration.

Pre-Event Review: Two weeks before the tournament, NJP will review and update all player DUPR ratings. If adjustments are required, changes will be made as space and format allow. Players will be notified of any updates.

Single-Event Ratings: If a player has a DUPR for only one event (Singles or Doubles), that same division will be applied to both events.

Doubles Eligibility

  • Players are automatically registered into their DUPR division category for singles and doubles.
  • Players may partner with a lower-rated player if they choose. Doubles teams compete in the oldest age group and highest skill division of the two players.
  • For requests to confirm a doubles partnership, please email registration@nationaljuniorpickleball.com

More About DUPR and Tournament Play

Tournament play is much different that recreational play, which is why a validated DUPR is important if you wish to play competitively. “I play 3.5 at open play” does not necessarily translate to a 3.5 DUPR rating. The good news is that if you win all of your matches, your initial DUPR rating will set you up to qualify for higher level tournaments in the future. DUPR ratings are needed for most levels of serious competition, so we’re glad that we’ll get you started on the right path at your first NJP tournament.

DUPR Account Creation

To create a DUPR Account for Juniors under 13

Currently DUPR requires extra verification for Junior accounts under age 13.

  • Go to https://dupr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
  • Select option “Account Creation for Child Under 13”
  • In the description enter: National Junior Pickleball (This will make sure they prioritize your account creation)
  • If you have any issues, please contact support@mydupr.com.  NJP is not involved in DUPR account creation or management.

To create a DUPR account for Juniors ages 13-18:

  • Visit DUPR.com to create an account using the player’s email address. DO NOT use a parent’s email.

No Partner? No Problem! If you do not have a doubles partner, please contact a player from the “Pending Teams” list in your division. If both players agree to partner, then select each other as doubles partner (only needs to be done by one player).

NJP does not give out player information or assign partnerships for NJP Local tournaments in advance. Partnership selection and coordination must be done in advance by parents/players. Once registration closes, NJP will partner players with a closely matched DUPR in the same age & skill division.

Tournament Format

  • Age divisions are assigned based on the players age on the FIRST DAY of the tournament.
  • Doubles events are Co-Ed, meaning boys and girls compete together and can be the same gender or mixed gender of any combination.
  • Doubles teams will play to the division of the oldest/highest skilled partner.
  • Divisions may be combined at the discretion of NJP to optimize player experience, based on final registration numbers.
  • Each event will be round robin pool play with playoff rounds. Every player will play a minimum of four games.
  • The top three finishers in every age/skill division and event will receive a medal.
  • Franklin X-40 is the Official Tournament Ball.
  • Courts are climate controlled indoors.
  • All players must have a (free) DUPR account before the start of the tournament. All matches are reported to DUPR.
  • NJP follows USAP rules, but is not a USAP sanctioned tournament.
  • NJP has no requirements that paddles be USAP or UPA-A approved. Junior players, especially beginners, use a wide variety of paddles from various brands that may or may not be approved. NJP doesn’t want to cause stress or additional costs for Junior players entering the game if they are not aware of their paddle status. We also understand that the paddle approval landscape is constantly changing and do not want to affect Juniors or their families until there are clear and definitive guidelines across the industry.

Skill Level Definitions

Players will be required to connect a DUPR account in order to be entered into Intermediate or Advanced Divisions. They will automatically be registered into the singles or doubles division based on their DUPR.

  • Recreational – No DUPR – 2.89 DUPR
  • Intermediate – 2.9-3.50 DUPR
  • Advanced –  3.51+

Appealing your DUPR skill level

If you believe your DUPR is not accurate and would like to be considered for a different division, please email registration@nationaljuniorpickleball.com with: Full Player Name, NJP Event, Desired Division and Reasons for appeal. A player’s overall DUPR/UTR/NJP player history will be the main determining factor in most cases. Appeals will be evaluated weekly and players will be notified of the final decision. Any change in skill level (up or down) will be at the discretion of Registration Manager and Tournament Director with the goal of providing the best overall experience.
